The topic of Burnout to Balance is one that is very close to my heart and something that I’ve been deeply craving to write about for a while now.
When I started out on my journey to becoming a Yoga Teacher, I knew nothing about the concept of “listening” to my body, softening and leaning into my divine feminine. It’s been an emotional and eye-opening journey so far, so I wanted to share some of that with you today. I wish I had read this exact blog post years ago, so let’s hope it helps you in the same way that I really needed.
For as long as I could remember, I had spent my life “hustling”.
Visually, we appear to be grown-ups. We may even believe that we are maturing into a fully fledged adult with every passing birthday, but unless you do some work on healing the subconscious wounds your inner child is hanging onto, then you will sadly continue to live out the same patterns, beliefs and behaviours from your childhood. If we’re not careful, we go through life on autopilot, without realising we have an issue.
Maybe this sounds a little familiar?
Can you relate to this? Perhaps you can even see yourself in this old version of me?
How do you feel when you imagine this girl?
Gosh, I definitely feel a bit sorry for that younger me; she didn’t know any better. She thought she was pretty happy, and it turns out, she was quite the opposite.
That younger version of me grew up being told that she must be ambitious and driven. She was taught to hustle her way through life and to compete with men. But, she also had to be a good wife, of course, and needed to create a blissful marital home. How on earth was she ever going to slow down? Could this “standard” ever really be met, whilst finding true joy?
There is only so long your body can operate like this before things have to change. Sadly, the catalyst for change can be complete and utter burnout, when our minds and body simply say, “enough is enough”. That can be a full breakdown, in rather spectacular fashion, or a slow and steady decline.
For me, I had started to notice some warning signs. I was already feeling extremely stressed, depressed and burned out at work. I was unfulfilled in many aspects of my life, as it happens. Not just my career. But I had just been on autopilot for so long, it was going to take a lot to change those habits of a lifetime.
That was when I started exploring a different way of being. I was being forced to listen to my body. Practicing yoga helped me with that because it encouraged me to pay attention to what my body was saying, Slow down, Soften, Lean into your femininity and explore those concepts in greater detail.
I got hooked on learning all about Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung’s 7 Divine Feminine
I wanted to understand and learn as much as I could about them. There’s a wonderful explanation of these archetypes and how the presence of them account for the differences amongst us all on Women Love Power.
During lockdown, I was grateful for the time it allowed me to embrace learning and I am so thankful to Mel Wells for her divinely orchestrated training, which led me to have so many breakthroughs about what being a woman truly means. Understanding how to work with different seasons of my life, body and even daily cycles has been a game changer. I’m not exaggerating when I say that my life looks entirely different.
Knowing these things makes me want to share them with you. I’d love to gift you my greatest lesson so that you can move from BURNOUT to BALANCE, because doing so is to honour your feminine energy.
As that quote by Aristotle goes, “Through discipline, comes freedom.”
It’s ironic, but it’s true! Even as women, we need structure and discipline… but within that structure, we need to make space and allow ourselves the time to honour our feelings, intuition and flow.
To really be able to understand flow, we first need to SURRENDER.
And unless we do the work, we won’t know how to surrender.
I know, I know. It can be a pretty overwhelming concept when you first begin to unravel these things.
I promise you – it’s really not. You just have to be open to learning how to surrender and flow with life. Honouring our feminine flow is like learning the right way to live, after so many years of being in a constant state of conflict.
How do you learn to let go and trust the unknown, when perhaps all you were taught since childhood is to CONTROL things, to PLAN your whole life ahead by making decisions based on others’ advice and life experiences?
It’s a strange concept when you think about. You plan your work, life and relationships exactly like your parents say you should or mimic the way that particular cousin did it years ago because it’s expected of you. And yet, you are a completely different person. You are a unique human with unique desires and needs.
This is a BIG topic, with big questions and realisations that require lots of time for reflection, radical responsibility, courage and bravery to actually act on. It’s one thing noticing and recognising these things. It’s another thing entirely to actually change them.
I say courage and bravery because it’s not easy to give up control on elements of your life where previously being in control of them has allowed you to feel safe and secure. When you have been taught one way to do things and have to reprogram your brain, it takes some getting used to. We are so accustomed to planning and controlling our entire lives that we also end up trying to control the behaviours, reactions and feelings of other people in our lives. This explains why heartbreak hurts so much. It’s the ultimate loss of control and a fear of the unknown.
So, we try to do everything in our power to control every situation that we possibly can… hence the burnout! Remember burnout isn’t just related to work. It can be physical, emotional and mental. And sometimes, all three hit at the same time.
To truly move from burnout to balance, you just need to trust that how you are at any moment is enough.
You may find my my “Not to do List” helpful, when putting some boundaries in place.
You don’t have to constantly be competing with yourself or anyone else for that matter. You don’t need to hit milestones everyday.
Learning to appreciate that there is beauty and joy in simplicity, in letting things be and in letting yourself rest. Listening to your body and learning to tap into your intuition can be so transformative.
